Abu Dhabi- Taweelah reverse osmosis desalination plant, located in the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), has achieved a noteworthy milestone by exceeding 90% of its production capacity, solidifying its position as the largest commercially operating reverse osmosis facility globally. This joint venture, involving Taqa Group (20%), Mubadala (40%), and ACWA Power (40%), plays a pivotal role in addressing the region’s water demand and aligning with the decarbonization objectives outlined in the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.

Having been integrated into the grid in December 2021, the Taweelah RO facility boasts the capability to produce an impressive 100 million gallons of desalinated water daily, with future plans to scale up to 200 million gallons per day. This makes it 44% larger than the current largest reverse osmosis plant globally, with a substantial capacity of 909,200 cubic meters per day. The strategic positioning of the Al Taweelah site, nestled between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, positions it as a crucial player in meeting the water demands of more than 350,000 households.

What distinguishes Taweelah RO is its commitment to low-carbon intensive reverse osmosis technology, a cornerstone in the decoupling of water and power generation. This technology not only enhances energy efficiency but also reduces carbon emissions by over 85%, aligning seamlessly with the UAE’s ambitious sustainability goals. Anticipated to play a pivotal role in meeting Abu Dhabi’s peak water demand, expected to rise by the first quarter of 2023, Taweelah RO is poised to make a significant impact on the region’s water landscape.

The ownership structure of Taweelah RO features Taqa Group with a 20% stake, while Mubadala and ACWA Power each hold a 40% stake. The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) have secured a 30-year Water Purchase Agreement, cementing its role in procuring water from Taweelah RO. As a leading entity orchestrating the planning, purchasing, and supply of water and electricity across the UAE, Ewec views low-carbon intensive RO technology as integral to achieving its strategic objectives.

The success of Taweelah RO underscores Ewec’s dedication to the decarbonization of the energy sector. Othman Al Ali, the CEO of Ewec, underscores the plant’s contribution to supporting the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 goal. Al Ali expresses pride in achieving the 90% production capacity milestone, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with partners to position Taweelah RO as the world’s largest commercially operating reverse osmosis desalination facility.

The adoption of reverse osmosis technology marks a transformative shift, with Taweelah RO showcasing record-low energy consumption of less than 3 kWh per cubic meter. The plant’s environmental credentials are further reinforced by approximately 50 MW of onsite solar generation, contributing significantly to its sustainability objectives. Upon reaching full operational capacity, Taweelah RO is poised to supply 909,200 cubic meters per day of potable water, setting new benchmarks for size, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in the desalination sector.

Ewec’s strategic investments extend beyond Taweelah RO, encompassing other low-carbon intensive water production facilities such as Mirfa 2 RO, Shuweihat 4 RO, and two standalone RO water desalination plants as part of the Abu Dhabi Islands RO Independent Water Project. The focus on reverse osmosis technology is evident in Ewec’s vision, with plans for an additional 290 MIGD of new reverse osmosis production capacity by 2027, aiming for 90% of all water desalination to be produced using reverse osmosis by 2030.

As the UAE continues its sustainability journey, Taweelah RO stands as a testament to innovation, efficiency, and environmental consciousness in addressing the critical nexus of water and power generation. The success of this facility marks a significant leap forward in realizing the UAE’s ambitious goals for a low-carbon, sustainable future.
