Oman- In a landmark move set to transform Oman’s infrastructure and logistics sector, the Sultanate has announced the initiation of the Salalah-Thumrait Truck Road (STTR) project. Spanning 67 kilometers, this road is poised to become the nation’s first highway dedicated to heavy vehicles, underscoring Oman’s commitment to innovative infrastructure development through public-private partnerships (PPP).

The Ministry of Finance (MoF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT), is at the forefront of this ambitious project. The STTR initiative aims to streamline the movement of mineral ores and other goods from the mineral-laden areas of the Wilayat of Thamrait in the Dhofar Governorate, offering a reliable, all-weather route for the transportation sector.

Oman’s decision to develop this project under a PPP model marks a significant stride in leveraging private sector efficiencies and expertise to bolster public infrastructure. The MoF and MTCIT have meticulously shortlisted five companies for this project, following an intense screening of 33 expressions of interest and eight bids during the Request for Qualification (RfQ) phase. The finalists include renowned global and local firms such as Vinci Highways, Strabag Motorway GmbH, China Communications Construction Company Limited, Plenary Middle East Limited in partnership with international companies, and Bouygues Travaux Publics in collaboration with a local entity.

This project stands as a testament to Oman’s proactive approach in addressing the challenges faced by the existing 85km artery that currently connects the north of Oman with the Dhofar Governorate. By offering a more direct and safer route for heavy trucks, the STTR project not only promises to enhance operational efficiencies but also to significantly reduce transportation costs and times.

The STTR project is not just about constructing a road; it’s about paving the way for economic growth and development. By facilitating easier access to Salalah Port, the project is set to boost the export of gypsum, limestone, and other minerals predominantly mined in Thamrait. This strategic move is expected to significantly contribute to Oman’s mineral industry, opening up new avenues for development in Thamrait and enhancing trade flows with neighboring regions.

Furthermore, the initiative highlights Oman’s commitment to sustainable development and economic diversification. By improving logistics and transportation infrastructure, the STTR project supports the Sultanate’s vision to expand its economic base beyond oil, leveraging its strategic location and mineral resources to tap into new growth areas.

As the STTR project moves forward, it exemplifies the potential of PPP models in driving national infrastructure projects, setting a benchmark for future developments not only in Oman but across the region. This project not only represents a significant leap in Oman’s infrastructure development but also showcases the nation’s dedication to fostering partnerships between the public and private sectors, thereby enhancing its logistical capabilities and stimulating economic growth.
