South Africa- In a remarkable leap towards a sustainable energy future, South Africa proudly celebrates the first anniversary of the Ilanga 1 Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant. This innovative project, situated just outside Upington, has supplied 100MWe of clean, on-demand power to the national grid since November 2018. The collaboration between engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partners COBRA, SENER, and EMVELO has not only illuminated homes but also created job opportunities for local communities.

The Ilanga 1 CSP plant is a distinctive venture contributing to South Africa’s renewable energy goals through clean, sustainable, and reliable power production. Its reliance on Concentrated Solar Power technology, featuring a patented molten salt storage system enabling five hours of energy storage, sets it apart and enhances its reliability in generating electricity even in the absence of sunlight.

A key accomplishment of the project is its significant contribution to reducing the carbon footprint. With no fuel costs and zero harmful emissions, the Ilanga 1 plant aligns seamlessly with South Africa’s commitment to a low-carbon future. Over 20 years, it is estimated to save an impressive 90,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, making a substantial impact on environmental sustainability.

The commissioning of the Ilanga 1 plant not only addresses the country’s growing energy demands but also exemplifies the success of the Government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). Initiated in 2009, the project predates the IPP Programme, showcasing the foresight of local partner EMVELO and the support of industry players such as IDC and DBSA.

Pedro J. Cuevas, Chairman of the EPC consortium and representative for COBRA in Africa, emphasizes the successful synergy of technology know-how, construction expertise, and local engagement that led to the project’s triumph. The economic impact has exceeded expectations, illustrating the potential of renewable energy projects to drive both environmental and economic benefits.

Siyabonga Mbanjwa, Regional Managing Director for SENER Southern Africa, reflects on the historic moment in South Africa’s energy transition. The Ilanga 1 plant serves as a beacon, providing reliable and sustainable energy for around 100,000 homes. Mbanjwa highlights the societal impact, including skills development, job creation, and the localization efforts that have accompanied the project.

The project’s significance extends beyond power provision, representing South Africa’s first black-developed CSP power plant. Mbanjwa expresses satisfaction with the positive social and environmental outcomes, showcasing a holistic approach to sustainable development.

Ilanga CSP 1’s achievement is not only a testament to technological innovation but also a demonstration of the possibilities within the renewable sector. As the fifth CSP project to connect to the grid in South Africa, it stands as a model for future initiatives. The project’s $690 million construction cost in 2015, equivalent to $724.57 million in 2020, underscores the scale of investment required for such transformative endeavors.

As South Africa grapples with energy supply challenges, the Ilanga 1 CSP plant serves as a timely addition to the national grid through Eskom. The success story of Ilanga 1 echoes the potential of solar energy in addressing the country’s energy needs while considering climate realities.

In conclusion, the Ilanga 1 CSP plant marks a historic milestone in South Africa’s journey towards a sustainable and renewable energy future. With its technological prowess, economic impact, and positive societal outcomes, it stands as a shining example of the transformative power of clean energy initiatives.
